Here’s a special beauty edition of Cute Stuff You Might Actually Be Able To Afford (a weekly feature in serious need of a less ridiculous name):

I work in a pharmacy, and I have a serious makeup-buying problem, so I have tried pretty much every drugstore beauty product. Here are a few of my favorites: Continue reading

I have recently developed an obsession with La Roux, which began when Tara mentioned that she had Bulletproof stuck in her head, and culminated with me drunkenly attempting some ill-advised Aquanet experiments.

Good Things

I have been complaining way too much. My busted foot and my financial situation are making me a huge bummer. This needs to stop! Here are some good things:

I found a purse I don’t hate:

it's usually less squashed

It can fit all the stuff I need, including a hardcover book! Continue reading

I took in some short shorts so that they would fit me and sewed on a missing button and painted the other buttons to match. I’m psyched for warm weather.

I also watched a ton of RuPaul’s Drag Race today, and I have so many new makeup ideas.

My mom recently found and scanned some photos of me as a kid wearing some cool outfits:

I wish I could find that turban

The uncropped version of this one shows that the Christmas tree next to me is wearing less tinsel than I am.

not shown: a strip of eggcrate mattress that I know was attached to the back of my head

This outfit would become even more ridiculous if I revealed the idea behind it, but I won’t. In my defense, it was Halloween.

why doesn't my hair look like this anymore?

This last one is my favorite, because my mother let me wear it out to Four Seas Ice Cream, the best ice cream place in the world. Something that always makes me happy is seeing a little kid in some crazy getup that their parents obviously let them pick out and wear in public just-this-once. I feel that what children choose to dress up in before they’ve learned to care about what’s cool or weather-appropriate is the purest, happiest form of fashion. Next time you see a four-year-old in a tutu and galoshes, ask yourself, “is this really any less practical than what I’ve seen on the runway this season?”

I just discovered Polyvore. Now I can make all kinds of outfits, and then not wear them, because they are a. on the computer and b. expensive! Hooray! Here are my first attempts:

Planet Queen
Planet Queen

Most of this stuff is out of my price range, and I don’t tend to buy new/nondiscount clothing, but I have to admit this is fun.

EDIT: I just realized that I can make the Planet Queen set play the song Planet Queen!

Kate Nash:

I haven’t really listened to much of this lady’s music, but she’s a snappy dresser and I LOVE her makeup  here.

Keith Richards may not have aged well, but he had the best hair:

I need this haircut

And here, I should be thinking “drug problem,” but I just want to print this out and bring it to my hairdresser (Althea):

that belt buckle is pretty sweet

Other good ideas:

  • Vince Noir
  • Josephine Baker
  • Louise Brooks
  • Joan Jett
  • Jessica Rabbit
  • skate witches (Althea and Tara taught me everything I know)

Note Joan’s gorgeous eyeshadow and the manicure in the foreground.

this is the best thing ever

I am excited about this picture.

The picture at the top of the page isn’t ideal, but it’s a start. It comes from this:

It’s a picture of me looking surly at my memere’s house at age 18, wearing a ridiculous outfit and reading a magazine (oh man, I bet it’s my memere’s Ladies’ Home Journal. I was so tough.)

My friend Rusty bought me that spiderweb shirt in Provincetown on a super rainy day that summer. I don’t have it any more, but I do have the tights. I remember the drive home, in his 1988 Plymouth Horizon in the pouring rain, was terrifying.

I’m probably wearing a skirt of some sort, but it appears to be smaller than Ladies’ Home Journal.
