HistoryChick

6 Oct

Polyvore user HistoryChick has been cranking out some seriously gorgeous sets inspired by influential women, and she was nice enough to let me share some of my favorites on this blog. You should totally click on all of them, because each set includes information on the subject in addition to a lovely outfit. She’s definitely taught me a few things about fashion AND history.

It was hard to choose just a few; HistoryChick has so many of these sets that she’s had to split them into four categories: Women Scholars & Activists, Women Artists & Entertainers, Royal Women, and Women Warriors & Athletes.

Happy Wednesday! I am frozen. Everything here is fifty dollars or less, except for coats, which are one hundred dollars or less.

listen to your mother

My mom was right (she always is; it’s obnoxious). It is totally hard to find clothes that aren’t for teenagers or old ladies. Making these sets took time, and I had to cheat a little: I couldn’t stick to the fifty dollars or less rule, especially with shoes. However, I do feel I obeyed the spirit if not the letter of my “cute stuff you might actually be able to afford” rule, and there’s no thousand-dollar purses here or anything.

Cheap Cute Stuff: Pants! by sweetdisorder featuring GAP

Here’s some pants, as promised! Sorry about all the truncated models. I usually don’t include pants in my sets, because like most women, I have to try on about 80 pairs and have an existential crisis before I find a single pair that looks remotely okay on me. I have had great success buying pants online from Delia’s, a store for teenagers that stocks just a few core styles of pants, but in a range of colors and fabrics, sizes 00 to 20, and inseams from 26 to 37 inches. I have super tall and super short friends who buy jeans from them despite being ten or more years out of their target demographic, and with the recent addition of a mid-rise skinny jean, I’m pretty psyched about Delia’s. I have found that their Morgan skinny jeans in gray or black are good for work, because they are more tapered than skintight and don’t have any external logos or dumb stuff on the back pockets.

cute stuff you might actually be able to afford: blue and yellow

I made this set on Polyvore with items that are fifty bucks or less. I’m thinking I might make this a regular feature, because even though fifty dollars is more than I usually spend on an article of clothing, some of the stores that are featured here have good sales, and I will use any excuse to make these silly collages.

Polyvore

I just discovered Polyvore. Now I can make all kinds of outfits, and then not wear them, because they are a. on the computer and b. expensive! Hooray! Here are my first attempts:

Most of this stuff is out of my price range, and I don’t tend to buy new/nondiscount clothing, but I have to admit this is fun.

EDIT: I just realized that I can make the Planet Queen set play the song Planet Queen!
